Under the steel economy programme, a rational, efficacious and economical series of Indian Standards on mail sections, nullify sections and angle sections was evolved in 1957 and IS 808 : 1957 WAS published cover junior, lighten load, ordinary weight, wide flange and heavy wei ght beam sections; junior, light weight and medium weight channel sections and live and unequal leg angle ysections. This threadbargon was revise in 1964.

In the second revision of this standard, part relating to medium weight beam sections - MB series, column sections -SC series, channel sections - MC and MCP series and equal and uncqunl leg angles were revised and published as Parts 1, 2, 3, 5 and 6 of IS 808, respectively. Sections not covered in these parts, however, continue in IS 808 : 1964. In the symbolize revision, the Sectional Committee mat up it convenient to merge all the five parts into one standard.
